Key Services Offered by IVF Center
1) Fertility Diagnosis and Evaluation. Before beginning IVF treatment, a thorough fertility evaluation is essential. This includes:
Blood Tests: To assess hormone levels (e.g., FSH, LH, estrogen, progesterone, AMH), which are important for ovarian reserve and reproductive health.
Ultrasound: To assess the ovaries and uterus, check for abnormalities, and measure the number and quality of eggs.
Hysterosalpingography (HSG): An X-ray procedure used to evaluate the fallopian tubes and uterine cavity for blockages or abnormalities.
Semen Analysis: A sperm analysis to evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology in male infertility cases.
Genetic Testing: Sometimes recommended to evaluate the genetic health of both partners, especially if there is a history of genetic disorders or recurrent pregnancy loss.
2. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF is the most well-known service offered at IVF centers and involves several key steps:
Ovarian Stimulation: The woman is given hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, rather than the single egg typically produced during a normal menstrual cycle.
Egg Retrieval (Aspiration): Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries under sedation or anesthesia. This is usually done through a transvaginal ultrasound-guided needle.
Sperm Collection: The male partner provides a sperm sample on the day of egg retrieval. In some cases, sperm may be collected through other methods (e.g., sperm donation or surgical retrieval).
Fertilization: The eggs and sperm are combined in the lab. In cases of male infertility, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be used, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg.
Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs are cultured for a few days in the lab to allow embryos to develop.
Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are selected and transferred into the woman’s uterus. This is a non-invasive procedure, often done without anesthesia.
3. Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation)
IVF centers often offer egg freezing services for women who wish to preserve their fertility for later use. This may be due to personal reasons (e.g., delaying pregnancy for career or educational goals), medical reasons (e.g., cancer treatment), or age-related concerns.
Oocyte Retrieval: The process of stimulating the ovaries and retrieving eggs is the same as in IVF, but the eggs are frozen and stored rather than fertilized immediately.
4. Embryo Freezing (Embryo Cryopreservation)
For patients undergoing IVF, excess embryos that are of good quality but not used for immediate implantation can be frozen for future use. These embryos can be thawed and transferred in subsequent cycles if the initial IVF attempt is unsuccessful or if the patient wants to try for another pregnancy at a later time.
